QUICK TIPS

Expressing your views, either endorsing or opposing, is your right as an American citizen.  It is expected, and Thomas Jefferson and many others said, it is your obligation to become actively involved in the governance of your state and country.

Phone, Fax, Email, Visit, or Attend "town hall" meetings, call radio talk shows, write letters to the editor.

• Write your points down first - you have only limited time; don't waste it fumbling to clarify an idea or find the right words:  do that in advance.  If you get stuck, spend some time with the internet searching on your issue or read what others are saying.
• Prioritize your concerns - there will never be a rule, order, or law that's 100% perfect.  Make the points that are most important to you first, and don't get distracted onto a tangent. 
• Use "I" statements - the person you're meeting with can accept your feelings more objectively (be more open minded) if you phrase things as they affect you, rather than if you point your finger and accuse them.  "I feel," "I believe," "to me this means..." -- these are effective ways to word your thoughts.
• Use Personal Examples - Any time you can include a personal experience, or describe something you saw personally - you will be more effective. 
  
• Be Accurate - Exaggeration or errors in fact only hurt your cause.  If you can cite specifics and give the source, your arguments will be stronger
• Communicate more than once - Legislation and policy is developed over a long period of time with many hearings, conversations, arguments along the way.  If you only write or call once, you may not be remembered, and the debate may have changed along the way.  Follow the debate and communicate several times with EACH legislator or policy maker - if you want to win the day
• Work Smart - You don't have to invent the wheel, or make all its parts all by yourself.  Work with friends or organizations to develop your ideas or review your words.  Borrow arguments from others, or use "tools" to maximize your time (we list some tools here).
